BÌNH THUẬN – Poor fishermen in Bình Thuận Province have been gifted 1,000 sets of multi-purpose life jackets to enhance safety.

Former President Trương Tấn Sang, together with representatives of the Central Committee of the Việt Nam Red Cross Association and NovaGroup on October 2 presented the life jackets to struggling fishermen in the province.

The 1,000 life jackets were worth a total of VNĐ1.5 billion (US$62,400).

This is part of a programme to ensure the safety of struggling fishermen, launched by the Central Committee of the Việt Nam Red Cross and implemented from 2022 to 2027.

A multi-function life jacket includes many useful tools to help fishermen encountering natural disasters survive at sea for about eight days while waiting for rescue forces for further support.

According to Nguyễn Thị Thanh Nhàn, Chairwoman of the Red Cross Association of Bình Thuận province, 1,000 sets of multi-purpose life jackets have been allocated to four coastal localities, including Tuy Phong District with 203 sets, Hàm Thuận Nam District with 29 sets, the city of Phan Thiết with 502 sets and the town of La Gi with 266 sets.

Đặng Thanh Long, a fisherman from Mũi Né Ward, said that many fishermen cannot acquire quality life-saving equipment by themselves, and he felt grateful for the support, as it helps ensure safety during fishing trips.

Vice Chairman of Bình Thuận Provincial People's Committee Nguyễn Minh said that 36,822 locals currently engage in fishing activities at sea, of which, 7,800 fishermen belong to poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households and do not have standard multi-function life jackets.

This is the second time in 2022 that fishermen in Bình Thuận Province have been given multi-function life jackets.

Previously, in May 2022, poor fishermen in 14 provinces and cities in the central region (including Bình Thuận) received 14,667 sets of multi-function life jackets, first aid bags, national flags and first aid training. – VNS
