HÀ NỘI — Party General Secretary and State President Nguyễn Phú Trọng said the engagement of the whole community including doctors, nurses, armed forces and ordinary people in the fight against COVID-19 was an outstanding example of national solidarity in which the Việt Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) plays a core role.

He was speaking on Wednesday at a ceremony in Hà Nội to mark the 90th founding anniversary of the Việt Nam National United Front – the VFF’s predecessor.

The front was established on November 18, 1930. Since then, that day has become the traditional day of the VFF, also known as the great national unity festival.

The Party chief emphasised that during the Hồ Chí Minh era, great solidarity was a source of strength, a main driving force, and a decisive factor for the success of the national construction and defence.

He praised the Việt Nam National United Front for contributing to the national victories and gathering people from all walks of life, creating national power and obtaining success in the Đổi Mới (renewal) process which was initiated and led by the Party.

In the current context, the VFF continues to uphold its role and encourage Vietnamese people to engage in policy and law building. The VFF’s Central Committee and its member organisations have promoted democracy at grassroots level and launched donation campaigns for the poor, he said.

Amid the traditional and non-traditional challenges, Trọng urged the VFF to keep renovating their operation and taking an active role in the fight against corruption, protecting Party ideology and combating views that divide the great national unity.

Also at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc presented Hồ Chí Minh Medal to the VFF for its contribution to the national construction and defence.
