Leaders pay last respects to former Party chief Lê Khả Phiêu

The memorial service for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee Lê Khả Phiêu, who passed away on August 7 at the age of 89, was held on August 15 at the National Funeral Hall in Hà Nội.

HÀ NỘI — The memorial service for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee Lê Khả Phiêu, who passed away on August 7 at the age of 89, was held on August 15 at the National Funeral Hall in Hà Nội.

Prominent among those in attendance included Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân, Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hoà Bình, along with many former leaders of the Party, State, National Assembly, and Government

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuân Phúc delivered a eulogy, expressing deepest condolences to the family of the former Party chief, saying the former Party leader was "a great loss to the country, the people and his family".

"As one of the highest leaders of the Party in a difficult and challenging period, he always emphasised his pioneering and exemplary character and maintained the loyalty with the Party; he always put the interests of the Party, the country and the people first," Phúc said.

"As an officer matured through battles, difficulties and hardships in the resistance wars for national liberation and reunification; in completing international tasks as well as in the cause of national construction and national defence, he always excellently fulfilled his responsibilities."

"In recent years, despite his old age and declining health, comrade Lê Khả Phiêu has actively contributed many ideas to the Party, State and Army. He is a leader full of enthusiasm, dedication and responsibility to the Party, to the people, to the country, and to the military. The life of revolutionary activities was a good example for people and his comrades. In the family, he was a husband, father, and grandfather who lived a simple, exemplary life, always making sacrifices and acting with compassion," Phúc said.

With his great dedication to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and our people, the Party and the State awarded him many noble awards, including the Gold Star Medal; Military Order; Victory Medal; Medal for Resistance War against America; Liberation Soldier Order; and 70-year Party membership badge. He was awarded the Itxala Medal by the State of Laos; the Fatherland Protection Medal by the State of Cambodia; the José Martí Medal by the Cuban State, and many other noble grants by Việt Nam and foreign countries.

On the same day, Former Party General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee Lê Khả Phiêu was buried in a solemn service at Mai Dịch Cemetery in Hà Nội. — VNS
