HÀ NỘI — US President Donald Trump arrived in Hà Nội on Tuesday night for his second meeting with DPRK Chairman Kim Jong Un and other bilateral meetings in Việt Nam.

Air Force One landed at 8.58pm at Nội Bài International Airport. He was accompanied by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney.

Trump was greeted by Minister, Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tiến Dũng; Standing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bùi Thanh Sơn; Chairman of Hà Nội’s People’s Committee Nguyễn Đức Chung; Senior Lieutenant General Bùi Văn Nam, deputy minister of public security; Vice Chairman of the President’s Office Chu Văn Yêm and Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Hà Kim Ngọc.

In addition to holding talks with Kim Jong Un, Trump is scheduled to meet high-ranking Vietnamese officials.

This is his second time in Việt Nam. Last November, Trump made an official visit to Việt Nam and attended the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Đà Nẵng.

The US and Việt Nam normalised diplomatic relations in 1994. The relations between the two nations were elevated to a comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

In the past 25 years since normalisation, two-way trade surged from US$450 million in 1994 to more than $60 billion in 2018. The US has been Việt Nam’s largest export market for several years. — VNS
