HÀ NỘI — A burial service for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam (CPV) Central Committee Đỗ Mười took place on Sunday in his native land in Đông Mỹ Commune, Thanh Trì District, Hà Nội.
Attending the ceremony were Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Trần Quốc Vượng, National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tòng Thị Phóng, Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình, President of the Việt Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee Trần Thanh Mẫn, leaders and former leaders of the Party and State, representatives from mass organisations, localities, armed forces and people from walks of life.
Leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, Việt Nam Fatherland Front, comrades, compatriots and family of the late Party chief observed a minute’s silence to pay their last respects to Đỗ Mười.
The State funeral for Đỗ Mười began at 7am on Saturday at the National Funeral Hall, Hà Nội. The funeral was held by the Party Central Committee, State President, National Assembly, Government and Việt Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee.
During his more than 80-year revolutionary career, Đỗ Mười made great contributions to the struggle for national liberation and reunification and the building of socialism.
He held many important positions of the Party and Government, leaving imprints in each position and contributing to national development, especially the development of heavy industry and the industrialisation and modernisation process.
With the motto “Việt Nam is willing to be a friend of every country”, the leader helped open a new chapter for the country’s external relations, creating breakthroughs in external relations and international integration.
His passing is a great loss to the Vietnamese Party, State and people, leaving profound grief for comrades and compatriots nationwide and international friends.
On behalf of the funeral organising board and the deceased’s family, Deputy PM Trương Hòa Bình expressed thanks to mourners for attending the tribute-paying and burial services for the leader, seeing him off at his final resting place.
Also Sunday, memorial services for Đỗ Mười were held at the National Funeral Hall in Hà Nội and Thống Nhất Hall in HCM City.
The memorial services started on 9:00am with the participation of Party leader Trọng, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, Acting President Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh, President of the Việt Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee Trần Thanh Mẫn and a number of former national leaders, among others. — VNS
