HÀ NỘI — Phan Văn Anh Vũ and two police officials were sentenced on Monday in a closed trial to a total of 22 years behind bars for disclosing State secrets.

A Đà Nẵng citizen, the 43-year-old Vũ, board chairman of the 79 Construction JSC Co, was handed nine years in prison. Phan Hữu Tuấn, 63, former deputy director general of the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS)’s General Department of Intelligence, and Nguyễn Hữu Bách, 55, an officer of the MoPS, received sentences of seven and six years, respectively.

The police issued an arrest warrant for Vũ last December after he fled the country during the investigation. He was stopped by Singaporean customs at the exit gate for having used a passport different from the one previously stamped for entry.

He was then deported back to Việt Nam on January 4.

Tuấn and Bách, meanwhile, were arrested in April this year as the investigation into the case expanded. — VNS
