HÀ NỘI — President Trần Đại Quang on Thursday hosted a reception for President of the Republic of Nauru Baron Waqa, who is in Việt Nam to attend the sixth Global Environment Facility Assembly (GEF-6).

Appreciating the attendance of President Waqa and the Nauru delegation at the GEF-6, Quang congratulated Nauru on assuming the GEF Presidency and the position as President of the group of Pacific island countries.

Việt Nam always keeps a close watch on the situation in Nauru and countries in South Pacific, the Vietnamese State leader said, expressing his wish that under the leadership of President Waqa, Nauru will continue to prosper.

President Quang stressed that Việt Nam is willing to share experience with Nauru in the areas of the two countries’ potential such as fisheries, agriculture, tourism and mining.

The leader welcomed Nauru delegations to Việt Nam to exchange experience and promote co-operation, especially in the spheres of Việt Nam’s strength such as rice cultivation, industrial tree planting, aquaculture and telecommunications.

The two countries’ leaders should utilise multilateral forums to hold meetings in order to reinforce mutual trust and understanding, Quang suggested.

He also urged the two sides to reach co-operation agreements in such realms as economy, national security and defence, education, tourism and agriculture to create legal frameworks for bilateral collaboration.

The host proposed Nauru soon send a non-resident ambassador to Việt Nam and pledged that Việt Nam will consider dispatching a non-resident ambassador to the country.

He used this occasion to thank Nauru for urging the Asia-Pacific Group to approve the nomination of Việt Nam as the group’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.

Việt Nam and Nauru should establish several co-operation frameworks and share each other’s stance on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including climate change, food security and natural disaster relief, Quang said.

President Waqa said he highly valued Việt Nam’s initiatives at the GEF-6, as well as the socio-economic achievements the country has recorded over the past time.

Nauru prioritises cooperation with Việt Nam in fisheries, food security and technical worker training, the President said.

He emphasised that Nauru will soon issue an official document affirming its support for Việt Nam’s bid to run for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021. — VNS
