HÀ NỘI — The Chinese Red Cross Society has donated US$100,000 through the Việt Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) to help flood victims in the central region of Việt Nam.

Chinese Ambassador to Việt Nam Hong Xiao Yong handed over the donation to VNRC President Nguyễn Thị Xuân Thu at a ceremony on Friday in Hà Nội.

Thu praised the support of the Chinese government and its people, adding that she believed co-operation between the two societies would further develop to a higher level, especially in emergency aid, disaster prevention and rehabilitation programmes.

“The donation from Chinese government and people will help flood victims and poor and needy families overcome difficulties and challenges of this unprecedented flood and heavy rainfall in the central area,” Thu said.

Previously, the Chinese Red Cross Society also released emergency aid of $100,000 to help people affected by the flood in the central region of Việt Nam in November 2016. Also in 2016, the society donated $50,000 to assist people living in the drought and salt water intrusion area in the Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) and Mekong Delta region.

On October 18, the Việt Nam Red Cross made an emergency call for donation to help people affected by the heavy rains and floods in the central region.

Till date, the society has received donations of nearly VNĐ20 billion ($890,000) from local and international organisations and individuals. — VNS
