CẦN THƠ – Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng yesterday asked the Việt Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) to encourage all citizens to get involved in building the Party and strengthening the political system.

Addressing the sixth conference of the VFF Central Committee in the Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ, he said the front needs to perform well its role as a supervisor and a provider of social feedback to Party units and local authorities in fighting corruption, wastefulness and other negative phenomena.
The front’s chapters at all levels must renew their working methods to meet the legitimate rights and aspirations of the people, thus forging closer ties between the people and the Party and State.
Trọng highlighted the responsibility of VFF and other socio-political organisations in abiding by the resolution on Party building and rectification adopted by the fourth plenum of the 12th National Party Congress.
Each official, cadre, Party member and VFF chapter must fully grasp the resolution’s significance for the survival of the Party and nation, and take specific steps to fight moral degradation and promote “self-transformation” and “self-evolution” within the Party, he said.
One of the most important tasks is to continue strengthening national unity with a high degree of consensus on ideology and action towards the goal of maintaining national independence and sovereignty as well as socio-political stability.

The Party leader said another crucial task for the VFF is getting the people involved in socio-economic development, through specific campaigns like “All people stay united to build new-style rural areas and civilised urban areas.”
The VFF needs to call on the people to exercise thrift and pool more resources for economic and cultural development, ensuring fair social progress, he said.
VFF Central Committee President Nguyễn Thiện Nhân said the conference review the VFF’s performance in 2016, adopt the VFF Central Committee’s action programme for 2017 and formulate new action plans for implementing the Resolution on Party building and rectification.
Participants will also sum up three-year implementation of the Party Central Committee’s Decision on the VFF and socio-political organisations.
Last year, the VFF spread the message of national unity, building of new-style rural areas and civilised urban areas; prioritized the purchase of Vietnamese goods, and worked to improve the output, quality, effectiveness and international integration.
The “For the Poor” raised VNĐ1.2 trillion (US$52.2 million) while businesses and organisations donated VNĐ3.46 trillion ($150.4 million) to support local social welfare programmes.
As 2017 is the second year of implementing resolutions passed by the 12th National Party Congress and the third year of implementing resolutions of the eighth Congress of the VFF, the VFF and its chapters will focus on five key tasks: raising public awareness of the power of national unity; tapping people’s creativity and spirit of self-reliance, launching national patriotic emulation campaigns; upholding democracy and protecting legitimate rights and interests of the people; fine-tuning mechanisms and improving the operational capacity of the VFF in the new period; and continuing to expand and improve the quality of people-to-people diplomacy.
The Party leader called on all Party units and authorities to work closely with the VFF. He said more public feedback gathered through the VFF would serve as a reference for the Party in refining its policies and guidelines.
At the event, the VFF appointed more staff to its Presidium and Central Committee.—VNS
