HÀ NỘI — Contributions from intellectuals, artists and scientists were present at every stage of Việt Nam’s revolutions over the past 80 years, Party General Secretary Tô Lâm said as he attended a meeting with outstanding individuals on Wednesday.
The event was held in the lead-up to the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution on August 19 and National Day on September 2.
Addressing the meeting, the Party chief said that intellectuals, scientists and artists, with their patriotism and progressive, revolutionary ideas, laid the foundation for the national movement for independence.
In the nearly 40 years since Đổi mới (Renewal), they have helped shape and drive the country’s comprehensive development as a pioneering force in the advancement of science and technology, as well as in promoting Việt Nam’s culture and its national identity.
Lâm said that today’s national achievements are the result of the country’s 4,000-year history distilled through 95 years under the Party's leadership, 80 years of nation building and 40 years of renewal.
These are the united efforts and diligence of millions of working people, including intellectuals, scientists and artists, he said, adding that the Party and State have always recognised and valued their role as a key resource for Việt Nam’s sustainable development.
Reiterating the national ambition of becoming an upper middle-income country by 2030 and a developed, high-income nation by 2045, the General Secretary noted that in a world marked by volatility, maintaining peace and stability, achieving rapid and sustainable development, and enhancing people’s well-being are critical and urgent tasks.
Fulfilling these goals requires the active involvement of the entire political system, the strong support of the people and especially the joint efforts of intellectuals, scientists and artists.
Knowledge is the key to development in the 21st century, he stressed. Meanwhile, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and renewable energy are profoundly transforming all aspects of life, bringing changes that people must adapt to if they do not want to fall behind.
The role of intellectuals, scientists and artists is thus becoming more pivotal than ever, as they not only bring innovation but also spread Vietnamese spirit, identity and values in a competitive and rapidly changing world.
To realise Việt Nam’s growth ambitions, Lâm called on this force to work with the Party, the State and the people to mobilise the nation's collective intellect, revolutionary spirit and patriotism and contribute to the country's sustainable progress.
Priority should be placed on spearhead sectors like science and technology, education and training, healthcare, high-tech agriculture, digital economy, digital society, green energy transition and the circular economy.
The Party chief also underscored the importance of preserving, nurturing and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture and national identity in this new era and digital age.
Intellectuals, scientists and artists should also demonstrate their dedication, actively participating in policy-making and critiques with a scientific, humane and patriotic mindset.
They are not only researchers and educators, but also innovators and moral contributors who help shape the country’s developmental path that centres on the people and the long-term growth of the country.
Lâm also emphasised their upholding of professional ethics and honesty, integrity, revolutionary spirit and social responsibility in a time overwhelmed by both real and AI-generated information.
Confirming the Party and State’s support for intellectuals, scientists and artists and their contributions to the country, the General Secretary expressed his firm belief that this group will continue to be a pioneering force to move Việt Nam forward in the future. — VNS
