Next Week: Demolising illegal-built villas: wasteful or not?

Recently, citizens around the city are talking about dozens of villas costing billions of đồng that have been constructed in Ba Vì District in the outskirts of Hà Nội without licences from the authorised agencies. As the city Government investigates the case, the public has been discussing how they feel the villas should be dealt with. Some suggest demolishing them to deter their creators from doing it again, but others say that would be wasteful.

What do you think about this case? What should the city do to handle it without wasting the building materials from the villas? Have you seen any similar cases in your countries? Could you share your countries’ experiences solving similar problems?

Please reply by email to, or by fax to (84-4) 3 933 2311. Letters can be sent to The Editor, Việt Nam News, 79 Lý Thường Kiệt Street, Hà Nội. Replies to next week’s questions must be received by Thursday morning, March 17, 2016. – VNS
