HÀ NỘI — Part of its ‘Cruel and Beautiful World’ Movie Month, the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) will present the Danish movie Dancer in the Dark tomorrow night, September 14.
Produced in 2000, the crime/drama/musical movie was directed by Lars Von Trier. The movie features a famous cast including singer Bjork and Catherine Deneuve.
The movie tells the story of Selma (Bjork) – a Czech immigrant and single mother working in a factory in rural America. Her salvation is a passion for music, specifically, the all-singing, all-dancing numbers found in classic Hollywood musicals. Selma harbours a sad secret – she is losing her eyesight and her son Gene stands to suffer the same fate if she can’t put away enough money to secure him an operation. When a desperate neighbour falsely accuses Selma of stealing his savings, the drama of her life escalates to a tragic finale.
Dancer in the Dark will be presented in original English with Vietnamese subtitles. The screening is at 7pm. Requested donation (at the door): from VNĐ20,000. TPD is at 51 Trần Hưng Đạo Street (4th floor). Tel: (024) 39366559. — VNS
