HCM CITY — A theatre show featuring young talents in cải lương (reformed opera) will open on September 18’s night at the Lê Hoàng Stage in HCM City.
The show, Ngọc Nghề Phương Nam (Theatre of the South), will feature actors Bình Tinh, Ngọc Hải and Trường Giang.
They are winners of Sao Nối Ngôi (Young Stars), a TV show featuring young actors in cải lương (reformed opera), produced by Vĩnh Long Television in 2016.
The artists are children of well-known actors who have devoted their life to maintain their family’s artistic tradition.
They will offer performances of vọng cổ (nostalgic tunes), cải lương (reformed opera) and tuồng or hát bội (classical drama), traditional genres of theatre in the southern and central regions.
Extracts from famous cải lương and tuồng plays, such as Huyền Trân Công Chúa (Princess Huyền Trân) and Trần Quốc Toản (Young Hero Trần Quốc Toản), will also be featured.
“My mom helped develope my career in a professional way. I believe that traditional theatre should be transferred from the older generations to the younger ones,” said 24-year-old actor Hoàng Hải, whose father is cải lương star Ngọc Dung.
Hải began his career when he was nine years old. He has performed in many plays, TV shows and videos.
He will stage with support of young actors of Trường Giang Troupe, a private tuồng troupe owned by young theatre director and producer Giang.
The show will begin at 8pm on September 18 at Lê Hoàng Stage in 144 Đinh Tiên Hoàng Street, Bình Thạnh District. — VNS
