HÀ NỘI – The fourth Việt Nam Book Festival opened on Thursday at the Thống Nhất Park in the capital city.

As one of the acitivities celebrating National Book Day (April 21), the festival has 80 publishing houses and distribution firms presenting around 40,000 publications in 100 bookstalls, covering a range of subjects including policy and law making, economy, science, technology, engineering, education, literature, cultural and social affairs and religion.

A representative of the organising board said they hoped that the efforts to promote a reading culture in the country by creating “an open space for book lovers” would meet with success.

Well-known and new publishers like Bách Việt, Quảng Văn, Phương Nam, Fahasa, Pedagogy, University of Education, Trí Việt, Women, Minh Long, Literature,  Nhã Nam, Đông A, Tân Việt and AZ Việt Nam are participating in the festival.

Phí Bá Minh, a student of Phùng Khắc Khoan High School, said: “This is the first time I have taken part in this book event. It is very exciting. I am a huge fan of fantasy and horror genres so I bought Dị Chủng (The Strain) by movie director Guillermo del Toro. I am looking forward to much more interesting book titles next year.”

Trần Đài Trang, an employee of Vietin Bank, was also focused in her interest: “I come to this festival with the sole purpose of buying books from Nhã Nam. I have been a loyal fan of this publishing house for many years. I must bring home ten or more book.”

The festival will remain open until Monday, April 10. — VNS
