HCM CITY — A new theatre offering traditional shows aimed at visitors opened in downtown HCM City this week.

The 150-seat Rex Sen Vàng (Rex Golden Lotus) is located in the Vertical Garden of Rex Hotel in District 1.

It offers traditional performances such as water puppetry, Huế royal dance, hát bội (classical theatre) and cải lương (reformed opera).

All performances will include subtitles in nine languages, including English, French, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

The theatre’s shows begin at 8pm every day and tickets are VNĐ300,000 (US$25) each.

The investors, Rex Hotel and Thái Dương Performance Company, spent VNĐ1.3 billion ($58,000) to build the theatre.

The Thái Dương Performance Company owns IDECAF Drama Stage, one of the region’s first and leading private drama troupes.

Huỳnh Anh Tuấn, art director of Thái Dương Performance Company, said that they hoped local authorities would offer more support to the theatre’s traditional performances to introduce Vietnamese culture and lifestyle to visitors.

“Our shows serve visitors, particularly foreign audiences. We’ve worked with dozens of tourist agencies and companies to develop our business,” he said.— VNS
