HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently given the nod for excavation at an archaeological site in the northern province of Phú Thọ.
The excavation will be conducted between June 20 and August 20 in a total area of 50sq.m in Phùng Nguyên Village, Kinh Kê Commune in Lâm Thao District.
The site was discovered in 1959 with various traces of the Phùng Nguyên Culture, dating back to 4,000 to 3,500 years ago. Objects of the Phùng Nguyên Culture have also been found in other northern localities including Bắc Ninh, Ninh Bình, Hà Nội, Hải Phòng and Hồng (Red) River delta.
Several working tools and jewellery made of stone have been discovered at the site along with traces of unhusked rice. Phùng Nguyên Culture is the initial period of the Đông Sơn Culture (1,000AD-100AD), which was the fundamental foundation for a culture associated with the establishment of the early Văn Lang State. — VNS
