CẦN THƠ — A delegation of the National Assembly (NA), led by Vice Chairman Vũ Hồng Thanh, extended greetings to the Khmer people in the Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ on April 3 on the occasion of the 2026 Chol Chnam Thmay Festival.
During the visit, the delegation offered New Year wishes at Huỳnh Cương Ethnic Minority Boarding High School, and visited Khmer residents in Tân Thạnh Commune and monks at Som Rong Pagoda.
Addressing the Khmer people, the NA Vice Chairman noted that in recent years, the implementation of major policies, particularly the National Target Programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for the 2021–2030 period, has brought about positive changes. The living standards of Khmer people have improved significantly, the poverty rate has declined sharply, and many have emerged as role models in livelihood development.
To promote sustainable development, the NA at its 10th session recently decided to merge and integrate three national target programmes. This integrated approach is to create strong momentum for socio-economic development, narrow income gaps, and ensure sustainable social welfare in ethnic minority areas.
Thanh affirmed that the Party and State consistently create favourable conditions for ethnic minorities, including the Khmer community, to preserve and promote their unique cultural identity while continuously improving their material and spiritual well-being.
He called on Party committees and authorities in Cần Thơ to continue implementing ethnic policies, encourage people to restructure production, develop modern cooperative models, and use science and technology in farming to adapt to climate change. He also stressed that the city should prioritise education, seeing it as a key foundation for sustainable growth.
For exemplary families and reputable individuals, the NA Vice Chairman expressed his hope that they will continue to uphold their exemplary role, serve as nuclei of solidarity, and encourage the community to build a cultured lifestyle, support one another in poverty reduction, and strive for prosperity.
On this occasion, the delegation presented gifts to monks, residents, and Khmer students, extending wishes for peace and happiness on the occasion of the Chol Chnam Thmay festival. — VNA/VNS
