ĐẮK LẮK – The Đắk Lắk Province Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue and Forest Protection Management Centre has organised a “fruit buffet” festival for elephants, where they dined on trays of fresh fruits to celebrate International Elephant Day (August 12).

This “buffet” was organised in Lắk District on August 11 and Buôn Đôn District on August 12 as 37 domesticated elephants were fed fruit and sugarcane on boat-shaped trays.

Trần Xuân Phước, director of the Đắk Lắk Province Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue and Forest Protection Management Centre, said that the centre created this special festival to spread awareness on elephant conservation to the people of the Central Highlands and Đắk Lắk Province.

The activity aimed to educate elephant owners on conservation procedures and the welfare of elephants while also giving them a chance to meet and share their experiences of taking care of the animal.

This occasion was also used to recognise the great value that these animals have contributed to the people's everyday life.

“Buffets” for elephants have also been done in many countries, such as Thailand.

Đắk Lắk Province has been looking into elephant conservation procedures in recent years as the number of wild elephants in the province and Central Highlands are quickly decreasing due to insufficient conservation methods and over-hunting. – VNS.
