KHÁNH HÒA  At least two people - an elderly woman and a child - were killed and six others injured today when a landslide buried 10 houses in Nha Trang City.

Initial information suggests that thousands of cubic metres of rock and soil slipped down the slope of a hill in Phước Đồng Commune’s Phước Lộc Village suddenly early on Tuesday.

“A large amount of rocks and soil from the mountain fell on people’s homes within minutes. It happened so quickly that they couldn’t do anything but run out of their houses,” said Đặng Văn Vững, a local resident.

The provincial police and other authorities have recovered the bodies of an old woman and a four-year-old boy. The six injured have been admitted to hospital. Rescue operations are underway as two more people are believed to be missing.

The landslide has damaged five other houses, local authorities said. People living close to the site of the landslide have been evacuated.

The landslide occurred near Nguyễn Tất Thành Avenue, which connects Nha Trang City to Cam Ranh airport, in the central province of Khánh Hòa.

In another incident, heavy rains have triggered a landslide and isolated around 600 households in Quảng Ngãi Province’s Sơn Long Commune in Sơn Tây District for the past five days, local officials said.

The landslide has damaged five houses and affected the lives of over 2,100 local residents.

District authorities have mobilised forces to clear the landslide and reopen traffic so that the region does not remain isolated. — VNS
