HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has approved in principle a plan to build a road connecting the Nội Bài-Lào Cai Expressway and Sa Pa in the north-western province of Lào Cai under the build-operate-transfer model.
The project consists of two sections, with the first 29 kilometres to be developed by upgrading National Highway 4D, and the second to include lengthening Provincial Road 155 by 25 kilometres.
The project will require a total cost of VNĐ2.5trillion (US$107.1 million). Land clearance will be completed by 2020 in the first phase of the project.
National Highway 4D is currently the key route connecting Lào Cai and Sa Pa, but it often suffers from landslides in the rainy season. In addition, many traffic accidents occurred on the highway due to the fact that it is narrow and has many dangerous bends.
The project is expected to meet the increasing transportation demand to the tourist site and reduce the risk of accidents on Highway 4D.
It will also contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the Nội Bài-Lào Cai Expressway and help promote socio-economic development. — VNS
