Hoan My and foreign experts share experiences on complex cases of hip and knee joint replacement

September 18, 2024 - 16:38
Ho Chi Minh City, September 9 The Hoan My Orthopaedics and Spine Centre, part of the Hoan My Medical Group - Vietnam’s leading private medical system – has organised a seminar on "Complicated Cases of Hip Joint Replacement: Consultation with Experts" to share advanced solutions for the treatment of complex hip and knee joint replacement cases.

The conference brought together leading industry experts, including Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh, Director of the Hoan My Orthopaedics and Spine Centre and President of the Vietnam Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy Association (VAAS), who has more than 30 years of experience in orthopaedics. He was joined by expert Matthieu Guyard, a specialist surgeon in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery at Saint Joseph Saint Luc Hospital and one of the foremost experts in general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, and arthroscopy in France. They were accompanied by other experts and doctors from the Hoan My Medical Group.

Optimal surgical solutions for hip replacement patients

Artificial hip replacement techniques have been performed by experts and doctors for more than 100 years worldwide and for over 40 years in Vietnam. Currently, for patients indicated for hip replacement, the dual mobile acetabulum is considered the optimal choice to limit the risk of dislocation of the artificial joint and the need for replacement after surgery.

According to expert surgeon Matthieu Guyard, the advantage of this technique is its ability to increase the range of hip movement. This is a crucial factor for young patients with high mobility needs, as it increases pressure on the hip area, leading to a higher risk of dislocation and injury after surgery.

This method is also applied to patients undergoing a second hip replacement. Typically, patients having a hip replacement for a second time face a higher risk of hip dislocation and complications post-surgery. However, with the dual mobile acetabulum technique, patients can maintain joint stability and reduce these risks.

The 3.0 Tesla SIGNA™ Hero MRI system helps accurately detect musculoskeletal damage.

He emphasised: "Performing hip replacement with a dual mobile acetabulum requires a high level of skill from the surgeons. They must be able to accurately identify the cause of hip joint damage, assess the risk of embolism, predict limb stability and balance, and master their preferred incisions and joint placement techniques before proceeding with the official procedure."

Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh, Director of the Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre, also shared his knowledge and experience in optimising hip stability in complex hip replacement cases after more than 30 years in the field.

Dr. Nam Anh stressed: "For difficult hip replacement cases with high rates of dislocation, optimising hip joint stability is one of the top criteria that surgeons need to focus on."

In addition to the exchange of expertise, Dr. Anh and a team of doctors from the Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre demonstrated surgery in the operating room of Hoan My Saigon Hospital, supported by internationally renowned machines and equipment.

International cooperation contributes to raising the level of Vietnam's orthopedics industry

Hip replacement is a complex technique that requires surgeons to constantly update their knowledge of innovations from around the world, as well as master state-of-the-art machinery and equipment to increase success rates and reduce complications for patients.

Dr Nam Anh said: "This conference is an opportunity for doctors at the Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre to acquire new knowledge from many countries around the world, thereby improving professionalism. Ultimately, we aim to become the optimal choice for Vietnamese patients seeking to enhance their quality of life."

The Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre is expected to sign a cooperation contract to transfer technology and techniques through the training of surgeons for hip and knee replacement surgery with Saint Joseph Saint Luc Hospital in Lyon.

At the seminar, Mr Richard Joan, a representative of XNOV company from Switzerland, also shared insights about the new generation of knee joints. These joints feature a rotating design that more closely resembles a natural knee joint, which helps patients by mimicking the functions of their natural knee.

At the Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre, hip replacement cases are performed by a team of highly qualified and experienced doctors, using advanced machinery systems. Surgeries are completed effectively, shortening recovery times and improving quality of life.

In addition to its outstanding achievements in the field of hip replacement, the Hoan My Orthopaedic and Spine Centre is also a prestigious institution for knee replacement and treatment. Here, highly experienced doctors have successfully performed a series of joint replacement surgeries using modern equipment and advanced techniques, including total and partial knee replacement. As a result, many patients have regained flexible mobility.
