HÀ NỘI — The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Transport to build an airport in Quảng Trị Province.

The CAAV proposed building a domestic airport for both civil aviation and military aviation purpose with total investment of more than VNĐ5.7 trillion (US$244.64 million).

The airport is planned to cover 312ha in Quảng Trị’s Gio Quang Commune, Gio Linh District, about 7km from Đông Hà City.

The plan aims to create runways large enough to accommodate A320 and A321 aircrafts and their equivalents.

The passenger terminal is planned to serve up to one million passengers per year, with reserve land set aside for future expansion.

For the cargo terminal, according to CAAV, because the volume of goods transported in the early stages would not be high, goods and luggage will be handled in the passenger terminal area.

On the proposal, aviation expert Trịnh Như Long told baogiaothong.vn that any airport has an economic, political and social role. The airport is an essential part of a country's transportation infrastructure, a backbone for economic and social development.

The construction of Quảng Trị airport must be associated with local development plans and depends significantly on the "ambition" and determination of local leaders to draw investors to the province, Long added. — VNS
