HÀ NỘI — Cuiest Ngô Đình Nại, ranked number 13 in the world, was ousted from the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup 2019 in HCM City over the weekend.
Nại lost to world number two Frederic Caudron of Belgium in the quarter-finals with by a score of 17-40 after 14 innings.
Nại, the event's runner-up in 2018, head previously defeated world number one Dick Jaspers of the Netherlands 40-24 to move on the quarter-finals.
A number of other Vietnamese players were knocked out of the competition’s qualifying round, including Trần Quyết Chiến (world number three), Nguyễn Quốc Nguyện (11), Mã Minh Cẩm (23) and Dương Anh Vũ (31).
During the first round of matches in Group F, Chiến lost out to Daniel Sanchez of Spain, world number 16, by a score of 27-40.
In the second match of the group, the Vietnamese player was held by Birol Uymaz of Turkey, world number 28, to a draw.
In the final tie of Group F, Chiến recorded a victory over Jeremy Bury of France, world number 10, while Sanchez suffered a defeat at the hands of Uymaz.
After three matches, Chiến and Uymaz both had recorded one win, one draw and one loss. However, due to point differentials, the Vietnamese player suffered elimination.
Last year, Chiến became the first Vietnamese billiards player to win the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup. — VNS
