HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese ace Nguyễn Văn Phương won his opening round match of the male singles of the Australian Open Junior Championships on Sunday.
Phương beat Ki Lung Ng of China’s Hong Kong 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 after more than two hours.
Phương is world junior No 44, while Lung is world junior No 61.
In the next round, the 17-year-old will face No 1 seed and world junior No 4 Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
It is the first time Phương has played in a Grand Slam. He performed well in junior tournaments in South Korea, Japan and China to qualify for the Melbourne event.
Viet Nam’s current top adult player Lý Hoàng Nam won the country’s only Grand Slam trophy in the men’s doubles at the 2015 Wimbledon Junior Championship alongside his Indian partner Sumit Nagal. — VNS
