HÀ NỘI — Hoàng Anh Gia Lai FC have signed goalkeeper Wieger Sietsma in preparation for the upcoming V.League 1 season.
The club’s website announced the move yesterday, with the Dutch goalie signed to a one-year deal, with his salary undisclosed.
The 23-year-old began his career at Dutch sides FC Groningen and SC Heerenveen, before moving to English League Two side Milton Keynes Dons on a free transfer in 2017.
The 6 foot 3 inch youngster made 10 appearances for the Dons but left the club by mutual consent on January 3 after falling in the pecking order.
He made one appearance for his country’s U19 team in a friendly against Turkey in 2013.
Sietsma is expected to improve Hoàng Anh Gia Lai’s long-time weakness at goalkeeper.
"Sietsma has ideal height and his ability has been proved as he played in League Two. I hope he would rapidly integrate with the team and we will play well in the coming season," said coach Dương Minh Ninh.
Earlier, the team sent young midfielder Nguyễn Hữu Đông Triều and keeper Phạm Văn Tiến to Becamex Bình Dương on loạn contracts. They have also lost defenders Nguyễn Tăng Tiến and Nguyễn Văn Hạnh after their contracts expired at the end of 2018.
The V.League 1 will begin next month. Hoàng Anh Gia Lai will first play Sanna Khánh Hoà away on February 1. — VNS
