HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese boxer Nguyễn Thi Thu Nhi overcame Gretchen Abaniel of the Philippines on the first day of the Hồ Chí Minh City Victory tournament on Sunday at Nguyễn Du Gym in District 1.

Nhi walked away from the fight with a purse of $17,051.

Two women’s fights and six men’s fights were held on the first day.

In the men’s bouts, Phạm Đức Đoàn and Nguyễn Văn Hải beat strong opponents.

Another match-up that gained huge attention was between martial artist Trương Đình Hoàng and Australian boxer Mateo Tapia, which Tapia won on a judges’ decision.

Hoàng was angry with the result, saying if it had been a normal fight, there would be nothing to be angry about, but “this is about my dignity,” he said.

Vietnamese boxers won five of their eight fights, showing positive signs for Vietnamese boxing.

The tournament is being co-organised by the Việt Nam Sports Platform and the Việt Nam Boxing Federation. — VNS
