HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam champions Thái Sơn Nam will meet with two old rivals in Group B of the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Club Championship after a draw yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Thái Sơn Nam are in the same group with Al Dhafra of the United Arab Emirates, Jeonju MAG FC of South Korea and Naft Al-Wasat of Iraq. Al Dhafra lost 0-2 to Thái Sơn Nam in this tournament’s group stage last year. The Vietnamese team also beat Nafl Al-Wasat 4-0 in the quarter-finals. Jeonju MAG FC are making their first appearence this year, so it is as yet down to speculation how they will perform.
In last year’s competition, Thái Sơn Nam finished third and grabbed the award for fair play.
The competition consists of twelve clubs, divided into three groups.
Title holders and two-time champions Chonburi Bluewave of Thailand will be out to make tournament history by being the first team to win the tournament twice in a row. They will have to go through Al Sailiya from Qatar, Kyrgyz’s FC Erem and Vic Vipers of Australia in Group C.
Debutants Mes Sungun Varzaghan from of Iran will play against Lebanon’s Bank of Beirut, AGMK FC of Uzbekistan and FC Sipar from Tajikistan in Group D.
Indonesia’s Vamos FC will be counting on home support when they take on three-time champions Nagoya Oceans, as well as Dalian Yuan Dynasty from China and newcomers Victoria University College FC of Myanmar in Group A.
The ninth tournament will be held in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia, on August 1-12. — VNS
