HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam came second in the 2018 Japan-ASEAN U16 friendly football tournament, which concluded in Miyazaki on March 12.

The Vietnamese lost 0-1 to Indonesia in the final match with the goal being scored from the penalty spot at the 60th minute.

Coach Đinh Thế Nam of Việt Nam made four changes in his line-up; one of these changes was Nguyễn Văn Việt, who replaced No 1 goalkeeper Nguyễn Duy Dũng.

Nam said as it was a friendly tournament, he wanted to play as many players as possible.

However, these changes made it difficult for his players to dominate the gold-medal match.

Substitute Đậu Ngọc Thành missed a clear chance at the 16th minute to open the score.

Indonesia were given a penalty 20 minutes after the interval, which goalie Việt could not clear.

With Việt unable to stop the ball, Dũng, who saved three penalty kicks in the semi-finals that Việt Nam won 5-4 against Thailand, was sorely missed in the match.

At stoppage time, Việt Nam created chances through Hà Trung Hậu and Võ Nguyên Hoàng, but they could not convert them to goals.

In the earlier match, Japan defeated Thailand 5-3 to take bronze medal.

Việt Nam will remain in Japan until March 14 to take part in a few invited programmes before returning home for their intensive training preparation for the Asian championship in Malaysia in September. — VNS
