HCM City — Vietnamese players on Monday began their three-day table tennis exchange with strong athletes from Japan at the Hoa Lư Table Tennis Club in HCM City.

The exchange is part of a series of events to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between Việt Nam and Japan.

The two teams will train and compete until March 7.

The event will see the participation of Việt Nam’s national team players, such as Nguyễn Anh Tú, Dương Văn Nam, Lê Tiến Đạt and Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang. National players from Japan include Hiromitsu Kasahara, Tomoki Hirano, Takuya Jin and Asuka Machi, who was the runner-up in the Japanese national table tennis championship in 2013 and won the title in the men’s doubles of the World Junior Table Tennis Championship in 2011.

“This is a good chance for Vietnamese athletes to hone their skills and gain experience. The Japanese team has been making good progress in recent times. They have only lost to China in the team World Cup in London last month,” said Từ Nhân Luân, general secretary of HCM City Table Tennis Federation.

The event is co-organised by the Consulate General of Japan in HCM City and the municipal Table Tennis Federation. — VNS
