HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Nhất Long overcame defending champion Andrew Hùng Phạm 8-2 in the first round of the Vietnam Match Play and Professional Golf Championship yesterday.

The tournament is being held at Hải Phòng City’s BRG Ruby Tree Golf Resort.

The 13-year-old surprised everyone when he led the ranking table following the first hole. Andrew won the second and third hole, but it was all he could do before Long came back to lead the points in the fourth until the 10th hole.

“I had no idea about Andrew Hùng Phạm. It is lucky for me because I had no pressure and was able to play freely and make magic,” Long, who has been playing golf for four years, said.

The golfer earlier triumphed at the Hanoi Open for youth on December 27.

Also yesterday, Trương Chí Quân beat Trần Ngọc Dương 10-0.

On the women’s side, title favourite Nguyễn Thảo My beat Hà Thị Phương Loan 7-5. She will next meet No 3 seed Nguyễn Thị Vân Anh.

The tournament, which returns after five years, is on until December 31. The final day will be aired live on VTVCab channel and the live score will be available on vga.com.vn. — VNS
