Unflinching despite a 2-1 set deficit, the Vietnamese regrouped at the net and on the floor to crank up their defense right on time, coming from behind to win 25-18, 19-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-8 in their first game of Pool A.
Liên Việt Post Bank will next play Hong Kong’s Kwai Tsing who lost 25-20, 25-14, 25-10 to Foton Pilipinas on September 3 at the Alonte Arena.
Also on September 4, Japanese NEC Red Rockets defeated Jakarta Elektrik PLN of Indonesia 25-16, 25-15, 25-17 in Pool C. Thai Bangkok Glass, with Vietnamese spiker Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Hoa, won 25-13, 25-10, 21-25, 25-16 against 4.25 Sports Club from North Korea in Pool B.
Taipei’s Taiwan Grand lost 12-25, 11-25, 19-25 to Chinese Bayi Army in their Pool D match.
Twelve clubs are participating in the tournament’s four pools with the two top teams from each pool advancing to the second qualification round.
The final is scheduled on September 11. — VNS
