Minh and Trang lose at Australia Open

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s leading badminton players Nguyễn Tiến Minh and Vũ Thị Trang crashed out in the second round of the Xiamenair Australian Badminton Open in Sydney yesterday.

Minh lost to Jin Jeon Hyeok of South Korea 19-21, 14-21 after 42 minutes in the men’s singles. While Trang was defeated by Li Xuerui of China 11-21, 11-21 in the women’s singles.

Earlier, the HCM City-born player Minh defeated Takuma Ueda from Japan and the northern province of Bắc Giang-born Trang beat Xiaoyu Liang of Singapore in the first round.

The US$736,000 event gives athletes one of the last opportunities to earn world ranking points to compete and improve their seeding at the Rio Olympics in August.

Both Trang and Minh have qualified for the Olympics this year. — VNS
