HÀ NỘI -- Phạm Thị Thảo and Tạ Thanh Huyền passed the Olympics qualifying round in the women’s lightweight double sculls category in Chungju, South Korea, on April 25.
The pair finished third in the final round with a time of 7:7.32 to qualify for the Brazil Olympics.
The Japanese and South Korean pairs came first and second with times of 7:3.19 and 7:6.89, respectively.
Thảo and Huyền had won two gold medals in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore last year.
Earlier, another Vietnamese athlete, Phạm Thị Huệ, also qualified for the Brazil Olympics, the world’s biggest sports tournament to be held this summer. She came second in the women’s single sculls during the semifinal round with a time of 8:0.53.
However, according to the rules of the International Rowing Federation, each nation can only accquire two tickets for Brazil – one for male and one for female rowers. Although Việt Nam’s rowing team have qualified for two slots, Vietnamese sports leaders will decide whether to send either Huệ or the pair Thảo and Huyền to Brazil.
So far, Việt Nam have earned 15 Olympic slots. – VNS
