Việt Nam won two gold and five bronze medals at the Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, which closed in the Philippines on Monday.

Lê Thanh Trung and Ngô Thùy Dung triumphed in their mixed pair event.

Earlier, Southeast Asian Games champions Châu Tuyết Vân, Nguyễn Thị Lệ Kim, Hứa Văn Huy, Lê Thanh Trung and Nguyễn Thiên Phụng topped the podium in the freestyle team event.

The bronzes went to the men’s and women’s teams. They also went to Nguyễn Quốc Minh in the men’s U40 standard individual, Nguyễn Thị Mộng Quỳnh in the women’s freestyle individual and Nguyễn Trương Quốc Đại in the men’s freestyle individual.

Athletes will compete next at the first World Beach Taekwondo Poomsae in Indonesia on July 23 and 24.

In other taekwondo news, Việt Nam failed an Olympic qualification round in Manila on April 16-17.

This means Việt Nam will have no taekwondo representatives at the Brazil Games this August. This is the first time Việt Nam won’t be represented since before Sydney 2000, when Trần Hiếu Ngân, a taekwondo athlete, pocketed the first-ever Olympic silver medal for Việt Nam. -- VNS
