GIA LAI — Chư Prông District in the Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) province of Gia Lai on Tuesday announced that its pig population is free of African swine fever.

It becomes the first district to have eradicated the disease in the locality, said Nguyễn Văn Luyến, head of the local agriculture and rural development office.

The outbreak was first discovered in pig farms in Ia Piơr and Ia Mơr communes on June 6, before spreading to Bình Giáo Commune. About 130 pigs were culled.

The district continues to monitor the situation and apply preventive measures according to regulations, especially in the epidemic area, guiding local farmers to disinfect pig farms to stop the disease from returning.

African swine fever reportedly still exists in three districts including Đức Cơ, Chư Pưh and Phú Thiện. — VNS
