HCM CITY — Workers and engineers on Tuesday continued work on HCM City’s Metro Line No 1 linking Bến Thành Market in District 1 with Suối Tiên Tourist Park in District 9 after the Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday.
Construction of the Metro Line No 1 project is expected to be completed by October 2020, said Trần Vĩnh Tuyến, deputy chairman of the city’s People’s Committee.
The city’s People’s Committee plans to advance additional capital for the project to ensure it stays on schedule, he said.
About 6,000m of rail tracks have been installed in sections. Vietnamese and Japanese engineers are checking the quality of newly installed rail tracks.
Long Bình maintenance depot, control centre and repair workshop have been gradually completed.
By 2020, automatic electronic devices, a camera surveillance system and other works will be installed to monitor the operation of metro trains.
Bùi Xuân Cường, the head of the Management Authority of Urban Railways (MAUR) of HCM City, said it plans to have 80 per cent of the project completed this year.
The construction progress has been speeded up to ensure completion by the end of 2020 as scheduled, he said.
Earlier, the MAUR had asked the city’s People’s Committee for an additional VNĐ2.2 trillion (US$94.7 trillion) to speed up the implementation of the metro project.
More high quality workers for the project are also needed, he said.
Last year, Metro Line No 1 project only reached 62 per cent of the progress for unexpected reasons, instead of the 65 per cent set for last year. — VNS
