HÀ NỘI — A blaze wiped out at least 10 houses on Đê La Thành Street in Hà Nội on Monday night. No injuries were reported.

Đống Đa District’s Láng Thượng Ward police chief Nguyễn Anh Tuấn said that the fire reportedly broke out at about 6pm in a downgraded rental housing unit on the street, which is adjacent to the National Children’s Hospital.

The fire quickly spread from the house No 905 to others in the neighbourhood in the next two hours, creating chaos as dozens of people tried to evacuate amid screams and cries.

Nearly 100 parents and their children who stayed at a building block of the hospital that was vulnerable to the spreading fire were also evacuated to other buildings.

Firefighters had to deploy three fire engines to fight against the raging blaze while traffic police blocked off the whole 5km-long street to ensure safety.

The fire was put off at around 8pm after it destroyed at least 10 houses from No 883 to No 993. Many others in a nearby alley were also reportedly damaged.

Several houses in the affected neighbourhood rented rooms to parents from outside Hà Nội whose children were being treated at the hospital.

Local authorities provided temporary accommodation at two community facilities of the Ngọc Khánh Ward to those who lost their homes to the fire.
