HÀ NỘI — Typhoon Barijat, with wind speeds of up to 75km per hour, was heading for the East Sea on Tuesday morning.
This is the fifth tropical storm to hit the East Sea this year.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the typhoon could weaken to a tropical low-pressure system before making landfall in northern provinces on Friday morning.
The northern part of the East Sea has been suffering from torrential rain and rough seas.
The centre said at 10am on Tuesday the typhoon was 800km to the east-northeast of China’s Hainan Island, and moving west at 15km per hour.
The centre has also said another typhoon named Mangkhut over the northwest Pacific with wind speeds of up to 185km per hour was heading to the East Sea.
According to the United States’ Weather Channel, as of Tuesday morning, Typhoon Mangkhut was equivalent in strength to a Category 4 (catastrophic damage) hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. It could pose a threat to parts of Southeast Asia by Friday or this weekend. — VNS
