GIA LAI — Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Welfare Đào Ngọc Dung has called on authorities of Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces to investigate a case in which a housemaid was allegedly mistreated by her owner.

On July 10, Y Nhiêu, 23, hailing from Đăk Glei District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, came home unrecognisable to her mother after four years working as a housemaid in neighbouring Gia Lai province. She was covered in bruises, cuts and burns and was later admitted to hospital.

According to the doctor treating Nhiêu, she sustained multiple injuries and inflammation to her chest, stomach, ears and left hand.

According to Y Nhiêu, she left for Gia Lai to find a job in April 2014. She was later hired by a woman named Nguyễn Thi H. in Thống Nhất District, Pleiku City for a monthly salary of VNĐ3.5 million.

Nhiêu said during her time working for H., she was regularly beaten, including with an iron bar, sword, hot iron or hammer. Nhiêu also said she suffered a miscarriage when she was five months pregnant due to the inhumane treatment.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Pleiku City police have summoned H., reportedly a drug addict, for questioning.

At the police station, H., whose temper was said to be unstable due to the effects of drugs, attributed her actions to the fact that Nhiêu had stolen money several times.

The case is under further investigation. — VNS
