Earthquake occurs in Việt Nam-Lao border area

An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was reported yesterday afternoon in the northwestern province of Điện Biên.

ĐIỆN BIÊN — An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was reported yesterday afternoon in the northwestern province of Điện Biên.

The quake occurred at 15:02 pm and lasted for about three seconds. It was felt along the border area between Việt Nam and Laos, particularly in Mường Pồn Commune, Điện Biên District, according to head of the Điện Biên Phủ Seismic Observation Station, Nguyễn Thái Sơn.

The epicentre was registered at a latitude of 21.508 degrees North and longitude of 102.982 degrees East, he said. 

“This is a small earthquake with short aftershocks and it occurred in a mountainous area, thus causing no damage to households or infrastructure,” he said. 

The earthquake is the seventh to occur in the province this year. Sơn said that 3-4 magnitude earthquakes normally occur in the province. — VNS
