THỪA THIÊN- HUẾ — Residents of a village near Phú Bài Airport in central Thừa Thiên- Huế Province have reported that pressure from airplanes taking off has damaged their roofs.

Residents said the incidents have been occurring for many years in Tô Đà Village in the province’s Thủy Tân Commune.

“I hear the sound of falling brick tiles right after an airplane takes off from the airport and flies over our home,” Huỳnh Thị Nguyện, a villager said, adding that such an incident occurred earlier last month.

Phạm Thị Kim Quyên, another villager, said 50 bricks from her roof fell into her home because of another airplane flying above 10 days ago.

Traditionally, locals build two parts of a roof that meet at one peak to cover their houses. These roofs use wooden beams to make frames and earthen tile bricks on the frames. Not many houses have a ceiling underneath the roof.

This leads to a danger for dwellers, when incidents occur caused by airplane pressure.

Quyên said 10 days ago, pressure from airplanes taking off led to bricks falling into her daughter’s room. But she was luckily not at home when the incident occurred.

Quyên, Nguyện and other villagers said they are waiting for a solution from the airport and local authorities in dealing with these incidents, and to prevent a possible danger to their lives and properties.

Nguyễn Tấn Hợp, the commune’s chairman, said such incidents have been occurring in the commune for three years, affecting more than 10 families.

“We recorded the incidents and made a list of affected families. But unfortunately, we don’t have the authority to work with the airport,” he said.

Hợp added that the incidents were reported to the commune’s council and were put up for a discussion at an annual session of the province People’s Council, where delegates sought compensation for the affected families.

However, no delegates came up with a long-term solution for the villagers, such as evacuation and resettlement for the families. — VNS
