President honours Hà Nội Medical University

HÀ NỘI — President Trần Đại Quang yesterday urged the Hà Nội Medical University to continuously strive to become a leading medical training and research centre in Việt Nam.

“As the most famous and oldest school in Việt Nam, the university should strive more to become the country’s leading medical training and research centre that trains both Vietnamese and international students and serves not only local but also foreign patients,” Quang said at a ceremony to celebrate the medical university’s 115th anniversary.      

The President praised the contributions of the Hà Nội Medical University’s teachers and staff on training of health workers and research over the past 115 years, adding that the university was the cradle of physician training with noble mission on people heath care and protection.

Quang asked the university’s teachers and staff to comprehensively acknowledge and effectively implement the Party and Government’s resolutions, instructions on education and training, people’s health care and protection with a focus on resolutions on comprehensive reform of education and training, especially reform of university training and the process towards financial autonomy. 

“More efforts should be paid to build and develop the university to become a key national health science university model that is a centre for scientific research and technology transference, provides skilled doctors and health workers and meets the country’s demand of health care and protection for its people,” said President Quang.

The President also encouraged the university’s teachers and students to focus activities on scientific and research programmes, especially projects on diagnosis and treatment of newly emerging diseases or diseases that still haven’t had specific treatment method or effective vaccines.

On the occasion, President Quang handed the Labour Order first class to the Hà Nội Medical University, making this the second time the university had received the precious award from the Party and Government for its contributions to people’s healthcare and protection cause over the past 115 years.

The university director Nguyễn Đức Hinh said that the university would focus its activities on reforming training programmes and research methods in efforts to become a new medical training model, calling Health Science University.

“Priorities would be given to developing a science and technology research and transference centre of the country and the region with a focus on the development of biomedicine, gene and protein technology, the use of stem-cell in disease treatment and prevention,” Hinh said.

Established in 1902, the Hà Nội Medical University has trained many skilled doctors and health workers, efficiently serving the country’s two resistance wars and providing health care and protection for its people. — VNS
