HCM CITY — The HCM City’s People’s Committee has decided to invest in an electronic toll collection system (ETC) at three toll booths in HCM City.

The three toll booths, which will be funded by the BOT (build-operate-transfer) mode, will be installed at Phú Mỹ, Xa lộ Hà Nội and An Sương – An Lạc locations.

The ETCs use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology under ISO/IEC standards. The wireless system includes e-tags and readers.

The system can process fee collections at a vehicle’s maximum speed of 40km/h. It will later be upgraded to 120km/h.

To pay tolls via ETCs, vehicle owners will be issued an e-tag attached to the inside of the front windscreen of a vehicle and will receive an account for fee collection.

ETCs can save a lot of time and fuel for drivers, curb congestion and reduce pollution as drivers will no longer have to stop their vehicles and pay fees manually as was done currently, according to the HCM City’s People’s Committee.

BOT owners have invested a total of VNĐ158 billion (US$7 million) for the three projects. — VNS
