PHÚ YÊN — A tunnel route on National Highway 1A linking the two central provinces of Phú Yên and Khánh Hòa will officially open on August 21.
Work on the 13.4km tunnel road, running through the Cả Pass, began in 2012.
The Đèo Cả Investment Joint Stock Company told Việt Nam News that it would collect toll on the route from September 3 onwards.
It said the tunnel and entrance, built with an investment of VNĐ15.6 trillion (US$748 million), would allow vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 80km per hour from Phú Yên Province’s Hào Sơn Commune to Khánh Hòa Province’s Cổ Mã Commune.
Each side of the tunnel road will have two 3.5m lanes, helping vehicles reduce time crossing the Cả Pass and the Cổ Mã Pass, which had to be done on a long, winding road until now.
The tunnel will be the fourth on the highway, following those running through the Hải Vân, Phước Tượng and Phú Gia Passes between Đà Nẵng and Huế, and the Ngang Pass between Hà Tĩnh and Quảng Bình provinces.
The company has begun work on expanding the single-lane Hải Vân rescue tunnel into a two-lane traffic route, and on upgrading the current Hải Vân two-lane tunnel from last year. — VNS
