HCM CITY — A research team from the HCM City University Medical Centre won the award for the best laparoscopic liver surgery video at the 1st World Congress of the International Laparoscopic Liver Society held in Paris earlier this month.
Nearly 300 abstracts and videos were submitted to the congress, which selected 37 papers and 17 videos for awards.
Experts from all over the world presented updates on indications, techniques and organisation of laparoscopic liver resection.
“The achievement has raise Việt Nam’s position in the field of laparoscopic liver surgery,” Assoc Prof Nguyễn Hoàng Bắc, director of the hospital, said.
Dr Trần Công Duy Long, deputy head of the hospital’s hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery department, said laparoscopy, which is a minimally invasive surgery, has replaced open surgical procedure.
It has demonstrated better cosmetic results with the incision being less than one centimetre in size and shorter hospital stays (4-6 days) compared to open surgical procedures, Long, a member of the research team, said.
More than 300 laparoscopic surgeries have been performed at the hospital since 2005.
Liver cancer is one of the most common cancer types, with high mortality rates in Việt Nam, he said.
The hospital receives around 1,000 cases of newly diagnosed liver cancer every year, of which 450 patients are suitable for laparoscopic surgery. — VNS
