HÀ NỘI – The 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) has wrapped up in Hà Nội with 26 gold medals, 51 silvers and 74 bronzes being presented to contestants.

All four members of the Vietnamese team won medals, with the only gold awarded to Vũ Thị Chinh from the High School for the Gifted of the National University of Hà Nội. This is the second gold medal that the Vietnamese team has achieved since Việt Nam first participated in the IBO in 1996.

The other three brought home one silver and two bronzes.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam said the contestants have a passion for science, the will to overcome challenges and the commitment to strive for a better future. They are also the goodwill ambassadors for peace, friendship and the future of the world.

Đam wished the contestants a bright future ahead and expressed his hope that candidates from countries around the world would later return to Việt Nam to work together to make the world a better place.

The 27th International Biology Olympiad kicked off in Hà Nội on July 17, drawing 264 students and 238 teachers from 71 nations and territories. The IBO was first organised in 1990. Việt Nam has participated in the IBO since 1996. After 20 years of engagement, Vietnamese students brought home 56 medals, including one gold, 10 silvers, 45 bronzes and two certificates of merit. — VNS
