HÀ NỘI – The central province of Quảng Trị’s Border Guard High Command has arrested three Lao people for smuggling 4,000 pills into Việt Nam.

The three drug traffickers, Keng, 32, Ho Ta Pung, 34, and Bunkham, 36, were all residing in Laos’ western province of Savannakhet. They were arrested in Quảng Trị’s Hướng Hóa District, some 400m from the Việt Nam-Laos border.

The trio on Monday confessed that they were illegally crossing the border to transport the drugs to Việt Nam for sale.

Local border guards are completing the legal procedures to charge the smugglers.

Earlier, on June 18, the provincial Border Guard High Command detained two Lao people for transporting 12,000 pills into Việt Nam. Both men came from the bordering Savannakhet Province.

The tablets they were carrying were labeled WY, which is the logo for a drug that combines caffeine with methamphetamines.

Việt Nam has some of the world’s toughest laws against drug smuggling. Those convicted of possessing or trafficking more than 600g of heroin or more than 2.5kg of methamphetamines could face the death penalty. — VNS
