The seven farmers were hoeing soil preparing for a new rice crop in the province’s An Hòa District when a heavy thunder storm came. They rushed to shelter in a temporary plastic camp in the blank field.

The lightning strike collapsed the camp and sent them into the wet field. Lê Văn Tưởng, 42, died soon after hospitalisation. On Sunday, the six injured farmers were hospitalised in Huế Central Hospital for burns to their backs, chest pains, and difficulty moving their arms and legs.

Hồ Nghĩa, one of the victims said the lightning occurred suddenly during the rain and he felt a strong electric shock from the strike.

These days it is sunny in the province and local farmers are taking the chance to prepare the soil for a new rice crop. Local authorities warned locals to rush into a home when there are signs of lightning and thunder. — VNS
