HCM CITY — HCM City-based Coast Guard Region No. 3 Command under the Việt Nam Coast Guard has stepped up efforts to build a comprehensively strong and exemplary unit, meeting the high demands of safeguarding national sovereignty over seas, islands, and the continental shelf.

In the face of increasingly complex developments in the East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea) and growing maritime crimes, the mission requires firm political will, professional excellence, and strong combat readiness in line with the criteria of being “revolutionary, elite and modern.”

Over the past five years, the unit has achieved notable results: 30 agencies and units recognised as “Comprehensively strong and exemplary”; 525 collectives and more than 2,000 individuals commended for outstanding performance and patriotic emulation movements.

“These achievements not only demonstrate continuous efforts but also provide momentum for the Region to fulfill its mission in new circumstances.”

Following directives from the Central Military Commission, Ministry of National Defence, and Việt Nam Coast Guard Command, Region No. 3 has prioritised political and ideological education, helping officers and soldiers strengthen willpower, ethics, and determination.

Colonel Lê Văn Tú, secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the Coast Guard Region No. 3 Command, said the unit has streamlined its organisational structure for efficiency, focusing on patrol and law enforcement forces at sea.

Combat readiness is maintained around the clock, with personnel, vessels, and logistics prepared for all situations.

Training has been renewed and the Command has consistently achieved high results in competitions and drills.

Discipline management has also been reinforced, ensuring stability and preparedness.

Key tasks

The Party Committee of Region No. 3 has outlined four main pillars to consolidate overall strength.

First, strengthening political foundations by innovating ideological work, enhancing leadership capacity, and cultivating the qualities of “Uncle Hồ’s Soldiers – Việt Nam Coast Guard officers.”

Second, streamlining organisation, cutting intermediate layers while prioritising human resources and equipment for law enforcement missions.

Third, improving training by integrating sovereignty protection with specialised content, enhancing legal knowledge, foreign language skills, and crime prevention capacity. The goal is that at least 85 per cent of training results achieve good or excellent levels.

Fourth, ensuring combat readiness by strictly monitoring sea developments and coordinating effectively with the Navy, Border Guard, local authorities and other forces.

With strong political will and unity, the unit continues to affirm its role as a core force in maritime law enforcement and sovereignty protection.

Alongside operational tasks, they also focused on soldier welfare, considering it an essential part of political work and a source of motivation for those on duty at sea.

In the past five years, benefits for active and discharged soldiers, war invalids, martyrs’ families, and people with meritorious service have been implemented promptly.

Career orientation and job placement support have been provided for discharged soldiers, while those suffering from serious or chronic illnesses receive special care and financial aid.

Statistics show this commitment: 339 beneficiaries were visited and given gifts worth over VNĐ200 million (US$8,775); hardship allowances were granted to 175 cases; and over VNĐ555 million ($24,350) was provided to families of deceased soldiers.

These efforts reflect both compliance and humanitarian responsibility.

Policy work has been closely linked with mass mobilisation and social welfare activities.

More than VNĐ2.3 billion ($100,910) has been mobilised for the “Gratitude Fund,” alongside the construction of “Comradeship Houses” and “Solidarity Houses” for disadvantaged fishermen.

Community programmes such as “Coast Guard supports fishermen” and “I love my homeland’s seas and islands” have become highlights, with 51 events, 37 competitions on maritime knowledge, 18,000 gift packages, 624 scholarships, 480 bicycles, and 21 free medical missions benefiting nearly 70,000 people.

The unit also supports poor students, reinforcing solidarity with local communities and enhancing public awareness of maritime sovereignty.

Looking ahead

Achievements in both policy and operations affirm that building a comprehensively strong and exemplary unit is not only a routine requirement but also a strategic solution to strengthen overall capacity and sovereignty protection.

In the coming time, facing both opportunities and challenges, the Coast Guard Region No. 3 Command will continue to implement directives from the Central Military Commission and Ministry of National Defence, promoting innovation in political, operational, and social activities.

The unit is determined to remain steadfast, combat-ready, and fully capable of safeguarding the nation’s seas and islands, contributing to the protection of national interests and the building of a modern, elite Việt Nam People’s Army. — VNS
