Landslide kills six including infant in Sa Pa Town

LÀO CAI — A landslide on Sunday noon in Sa Pa Town, northern mountainous province of Lào Cai buried 17 people. Six have been found dead while nine others were injured.

A 20-metre-high mountain suddenly collapsed at 1pm during heavy rain and swept through Thào Hồng Dến 2 residential area, Mường Hoa Commune.

Located about 100m from the foot of the mountain, the residential area is home to four houses with a total of 26 residents.

Nine people managed to escape. Seventeen others were buried by mud and rubble.

Local authorities mobilised 80 soldiers and police to search for the victims.

By 3.30pm, six bodies were found, including a 68-year-old woman, a one-year-old boy and an infant.

Under the impact of super typhoon Yagi, Sa Pa Town recorded torrential rain with volume of around 100m since Saturday night.

Local tourism services have been suspended from Sunday until further notice to ensure safety. — VNS
